Powering Alaska’s Next Generation Workforce One Experience at a Time
At Battelle, we believe science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) unlock opportunities for students, communities and the future. That belief drives our commitment to programs that connect learning to real-world careers. In Alaska, where geography and environment create unique challenges, these programs are transforming what’s possible for students across the state.
For the past seven years, Battelle has supported Alaska Resource Education (ARE) and the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District’s College & Career Readiness initiatives, reaching thousands of students through immersive career exploration programs. These efforts, supported by Battelle and Marathon, are more than educational experiences; they are investments in the next generation of innovators who will help to drive Alaska’s economy and the critical workforce of tomorrow.

Launch Programs: Career Exploration at Its Pinnacle
The ARE Launch Programs are designed for high school students to experience in-depth, hands-on learning that goes far beyond the classroom. These programs offer intensive, multi-hour touchpoints that are focused, enriching and transformative.
- ARE offers several Launch programs. Each one is flexible to meet the needs of each partner school or community. These programs include ARE Rockstars, an in-depth look at rocks, minerals, and mining-related careers, and Powerful Opportunities for Women in Resources (POWR), an all-girls program designed to break down stereotypes that resource industry jobs are for “the boys.”
- Amped on Energy explores the sources, connectivity, and cost of energy and the associated careers. This Amped on Energy camp was offered as a 40-hour, week-long deep dive into energy-focused careers. Students stay overnight in local community college dorms, creating an authentic college experience while engaging in career-focused learning.
These programs are supported by grant funding to ensure access to learning at its pinnacle. Students complete pre- and post-assessments to measure growth in mindset, awareness and understanding of career opportunities. The impact is clear: Alaska Vocational Technical Education Center has enrolled students who previously attended Amped, demonstrating that these experiences open doors to real futures.

Energy Camp: Where STEM Comes Alive
During the Amped on Energy camp, students explore energy systems, resource management, and sustainability through interactive activities. They see how technology powers homes and businesses, and why innovation matters. Teachers report that students return inspired, asking questions that drive deeper learning. That spark of curiosity is the foundation of progress.
But what makes this program truly remarkable is the human element. Students from multiple communities across the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District, which covers an area the size of North Carolina, travel by bus, car, boat and even plane to attend. Some come from overwater villages, flying to the mainland to participate. For many, this is their first time leaving their hometown for an immersive educational experience.
Experiences That Inspire
During Amped programs, students don’t just sit in classrooms; they explore the real world of energy and science. A recent group of students toured a Marathon plant, gaining firsthand insight into how energy powers the nation.
And it’s not just energy they’re learning about. During the recent Amped camp, 19 students traveled to Homer, Alaska, for a maritime-focused career workshop, supported by the Alaska Workforce Alliance. They even got to step aboard a University of Alaska Fairbanks research vessel destined for Antarctica, connecting their learning to cutting-edge science and environmental stewardship.
These experiences give students a real-world view of career opportunities they might never have imagined, and these opportunities can change the trajectory of their lives. One student was so excited about this opportunity that he has now set his career sights on being a mariner.

Collaboration That Drives Impact
Programs like these succeed because of partnerships. Battelle and Marathon work alongside educators, local leaders, and organizations such as Alaska Resource Education and the Alaska Workforce Alliance to make STEM accessible. Together, we ensure students have the resources, mentorship and opportunities they need to thrive.
Looking Ahead
The future of Alaska’s workforce depends on continued investment in STEM education. Battelle and Marathon are committed to expanding these programs and introducing new topics like renewable energy. By fostering curiosity and confidence, we’re helping students become problem-solvers and leaders in a rapidly changing world.
