Battelle Shines at AGU24: A Week of Innovation and Collaboration

There are thousands of conferences every year—it’s an important way to meet with colleagues, network, present findings and ideas, learn new information, and prospect for business. At Battelle, our Solvers attend many such conferences—and while all are important for engaging communities and partners, some have a higher degree of impact.
Such is the case for the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Annual Meeting, the world’s largest gathering of earth and space scientists. This year’s event, held in Washington, D.C., brought together over 30,000 attendees from more than 100 countries, including government agencies, scientists, researchers, industry professionals, and students, and provided the opportunity to engage with the global research community and share research to better understand our planet and environment. Battelle, a long-standing partner and significant sponsor of the event, played a pivotal role in showcasing our leadership in scientific research and innovation. Our presence at AGU24 was marked by engaging discussions, insightful presentations, and a commitment to advancing geophysical sciences.
A Hub of Activity at Battelle’s Booth
Battelle hosted a booth in the packed Exhibit Hall, where conference attendees got to interact with staff from the National Ecological Observatory Network(NEON) and Arctic Research Support & Logistics Services (ARSLS), both U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) programs that are operated by Battelle. Our experts were on hand to discuss a wide range of topics, including resilience, remediation, environmental science and polar research, and how to access publicly available data across our 81 NEON field sites. With a large amount of traffic, the booth served as a dynamic platform for engaging discussions and networking with attendees from diverse backgrounds. The interest in our work was palpable, with many visitors eager to learn more about our innovative solutions and contributions to the scientific community.
Additionally, there was significant interest in careers at Battelle, with attendees exploring opportunities in fields such as environmental science, engineering, energy and resilience, and Arctic research. Battelle is dedicated to fostering the next generation of STEM experts and we encourage those interested to explore our open positions and career opportunities at battelle.org/careers.
Highlighting Our Expertise and Innovations
Throughout the week, Battelle's Solvers working on the NEON Program hosted several presentations and events highlighting our expertise in ecological research and our commitment to enabling science in changing environments. Our sessions on ecological data utility and research infrastructure were particularly well-attended, reflecting the growing interest in these critical areas of science. The NEON team conducted two oral sessions, one town hall, and presented six posters, showcasing the breadth and depth of our work in areas such as wildfire prediction modeling and remote sensing networks. Information on NEON data resources was also shared at the NSF exhibit booth.
In addition to our focus on ecological research, we highlighted solutions in environmental remediation and resilience. These efforts are crucial in addressing the pressing challenges posed in the U.S. by environmental contamination. Our work in these areas is driven by a commitment to developing sustainable solutions that protect and preserve our planet for future generations.

Advancing Polar Research
Battelle's dedication to advancing research in polar regionswas a key focus at AGU24. As a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing science and technology, we enable researchers to efficiently, effectively, and safely conduct research in the critically important areas of the Arctic region.
Additionally, our Arctic team helped coordinate the logistics for the NSF’s Arctic Sciences Town Hall which was led by NSF’s Arctic Sciences Section Head. This event provided a platform for discussing the latest developments in Arctic research and promoting cooperative efforts among stakeholders.
Fostering Collaboration and Partnerships
As a gesture of gratitude, Battelle hosted a Collaborator's Reception to convene clients and team partners. This event underscored our commitment to building strong partnerships within the scientific community. By working together, we can drive innovation and make meaningful progress in addressing the complex challenges facing our world.

Engaging with the Global Research Community
Our participation in AGU24 was not just about showcasing Battelle’s work; it was about engaging with the global research community and contributing to the advancement of earth sciences. The conference provided an invaluable opportunity to connect with researchers and practitioners, industry professionals, and students from around the world. These interactions are essential for fostering collaboration, sharing knowledge, and driving innovation to create a positive impact.

Looking Ahead
Our team was inspired by the passion and dedication of the global scientific community at AGU24. We view our participation in the AGU Annual Meeting as a resounding success, with engaging booth activities and insightful presentations that showcased Battelle’s leadership in scientific research. We remain committed to advancing scientific research and innovation, and we look forward to continuing our work in collaboration with our partners. We are proud to be part of this vibrant community and are eager to continue contributing to the future of science and technology.
