Intern Spotlight: Asya Akkus’ Journey on Battelle’s CBRNE Defense Team
Meet Asya Akkus, a rising senior majoring in Computer Science at Case Western Reserve University. This summer, Asya is doing more than writing code. She is engineering a software solution designed to streamline research development workflows, with the potential to standardize data management and improve efficiency across Battelle’s laboratory network. As part of the CBRNE Defense team, Asya is gaining hands-on experience at the crossroads of software engineering and national security.
CBRNE, short for Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosives, is a critical area focused on addressing some of the most serious threats to public safety. Being part of this team gives Asya the opportunity to contribute to Battelle’s innovative efforts in protecting communities and advancing technology in defense and emergency response. This connection makes her internship not only a technical challenge but also a meaningful contribution to a vital cause.
Asya’s journey to Battelle began with a spark of curiosity and has since evolved into a meaningful experience filled with impact. “I first discovered Battelle during my internship at Los Alamos National Lab last summer,” Asya recalls. “As I learned more about its role in managing eight of the US national labs and its interdisciplinary approach to solving complex societal challenges, I was drawn in.”
That spark led to action. Asya applied, was selected, and now finds herself actively contributing at the intersection of applied science and software development.
Building Tools with Real Impact
Asya is currently working alongside two fellow interns to develop a Research and Development application specifically designed to support chemists in their lab workflows.
Her focus has been on improving user interface systems, but what really excites her is the potential reach of the project. She says, “What excites me the most about it is the fact that this system could eventually be used across all Battelle chemistry labs, not just CBRNE’s facilities.”
Collaboration Across Disciplines
Working in a hybrid, interdisciplinary environment, Asya and her team rely on tools like Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, and GitHub to stay aligned. But the real magic happens in their curiosity-driven collaboration.
“Our team includes software engineers and chemists,” Asya says. “What I love is how eager everyone is to learn from each other. It’s inspiring to see both sides share enthusiasm for workflows, subject matter and concepts outside their individual fields.”
The experience has given her a deeper appreciation for the synergy that comes from crossing disciplinary lines, foundational to Battelle’s innovation culture.
A Culture That Sets the Standard
One of the most unexpected and memorable parts of Asya’s internship? The people.
“What struck me most is how people here balance empathy and integrity with deep expertise,” she reflects. “It’s inspiring. Especially given the serious nature of our work, being a part of this kind of culture is inspiring.”
At Battelle, technical excellence is expected, and how people treat one another, how they lead and how they collaborate makes the work even more meaningful.
Moments Off the Clock
Internships aren’t all labs and logins. Some of Asya’s favorite memories have come from unexpected places, like the volleyball court.
“I really enjoyed playing volleyball with the other interns,” she smiles. “It was such a fun bonding activity. No pressure, just a good time with great people. Thanks to this experience, I’m planning to join the intramural volleyball team back at school this fall!”
Shaping What Comes Next
Beyond new technical skills and friendships, Asya’s experience at Battelle has also sparked a deeper sense of purpose.
“This summer at Battelle helped me solidify my decision in pursuing a PhD,” she says. “I’ll be applying to applied physics programs focused on AI and modeling/simulation. I want to contribute at the highest level to organizations like Battelle that are solving real-world problems.”
Leadership Insight
Asya’s manager, Richard Hecker, reflected on the importance of internships in shaping both talent and opportunity:
“Battelle internships provide students with valuable career insight and work experience. Battelle employees are able to engage with interns who bring fresh perspectives and applicable skillsets to the table. ”
